Not all Shepper checks require speaking with staff, but some (like mystery shopping or product audits) do. It’s important to make an effort to interact, even if it feels awkward or you’re initially turned down. This helps you complete the job successfully and shows professionalism.
Here are some practical tips:
Check store opening times before travelling to the location of the job.
Locate your Letter of Authority in the job resources (if included). You can show it on your phone or print it to reassure staff if requested. Do not disclose that you are a mystery shopper unless absolutely necessary.
Read the task description in the app before entering the store. Know exactly what’s expected and what to say if staff ask why you’re there.
Dress appropriately for the visit, especially on overt missions. Avoid overly casual clothing like tracksuits or flip-flops.
Making Interactions Easier
Read the job description carefully to familiarise yourself with the client and questions.
If staff ask for extra info, you can show the Letter of Authority.
Handling Tricky Situations
Sometimes it can be difficult to take a picture or ask a question directly. In these cases, you can give a simple, honest excuse, such as:
“I’m taking this photo for a personal note/reminder.”
“I want to show my partner/kid/friend how the item looks.”
“I’m comparing products for my own reference.”
If a staff member ends the interaction too quickly, don’t be discouraged. You are encouraged to continue browsing other products, look around the store, or observe the overall atmosphere to gather the information required for your check.
The key is to always make a genuine attempt to interact, don’t skip the step just because it feels awkward.
If a staff member refuses entry or won’t let you complete the check, leave politely and report it immediately. We’ll review and follow up.
Never visit a store if you’ve previously been asked to leave.
Support is always available via live chat in the app and also via email.
Happy checking! 💚
